UP Ang Galing Mo (UP Centennial Kick Off)

"Aati-atihan" UP version

Air show by alumni now with PAF

This "caricature" of the oblation danced to shrieks from the audience.

A tribute to ubiquitous ikot jeepneys, boon of student life.

Creative floats from the College of Fine Arts

What is UP life without legitimate protest?

Ang galing mo.

That is the theme of the University of the Philippines' centennial celebration that kicks off today, January 8. I didn't like the slogan much. I thought the UP community could do better than flaunt its tradition of excellence. I'd say that should be quietly treated as a given. But oh well ... it's too late to suggest something more ... uhmmm ... classy.

I don't usually join parades especially one held in the middle of a warm afternoon. But I just couldn't pass this one up. My days at UP are numbered and I am bent to stock up as much memories as I can to last me through the rest of this lifetime.

Anyway, this isn't about me. It's about the parade that will begin a year round commemoration of the 100th year of the school that has cradled heroic types as well as infidels of sorts and those in between; successful people and those not so, given the infinite nuances of the word "success."

Whether or not you identify with UP, enjoy these images of the memorable parade.

My small-scale (UP ISSI) contingent

Famished, thirsty, while waiting for formation.

There are two celebrities in this photo. Can you spot them? (hahaha!)

It didn't take me long to spot you, that's for sure. I had to look at everybody else tho' before I spotted Richard, totoo! =) So what's he doing there?

Oy I can spot 2 celebrities. Annamanila and Richard Gomez. I couldn't attend because I had to bring my daughter to the doctor. I only got to see the Fireworks.

Forever59er said...

Gina!

Richard took a certificate program at the Film Institute, College of Mass Communication. I heard he also took (or is still taking) a course at the UP Open University (our distance ed campus).

Noems!

Sayang, sana you joined our contingent. Ang konti namin eh. Anyway, marami pa namang eveents the year round. Conferences, art exhibits, book launches, concerts, especially concerts. Minsan, lets go together.

Abaniko said...

Parang ikaw ang celebrity sa last pic ah. Ikaw ang pinaligiran ng mga tao. :P

Forever59er said...

Abaniko!

Ang galing ko talagang mag-positioning ano? There was that spot right in the middle and I told the students, dito ako, dito ako ha? (Very similar to a red spot on the scrabble board where your Z or Q falls on a blue.) Di naman maka-protest ang mga bata. :)

extra lang yata si Goma at ikaw Anna ang center of everything! ha ha ha.

The kick-off must have been a nationwide thing. I must have missed ours in Cebu.

pau said...

ay, your from UP pala. i love your blog.

ScroochChronicles said...

Ikaw ang pinaka-maningning na bituin dyan sa photo-op na yan. Palamuti na lang si Goma. O di ba :)

Sayang, I missed it. I'm not from UP but I wanted to see the kick-off. Was stuck in a meeting in Manila the whole day kaya di ko na naabutan.

You look great :)

Hope to see you soon :)

feng said...

hahaha, eh kung hindi lang matangkad si Richard, di ko pa sya nakilala! I was going to say pa naman that you're the only star that I see in the photo. :)

looks like you and colleagues had a grand time during the kick off!

hay, can't help but reminisce the good old student life back then. I miss Rodicks, as well as the fishball and bbque stands, and the Ikot jeepneys.

docemdy said...

Annamanila, thanks for this post. Even if I wasn't there, I felt I was because of your pictures. And I did recognize you and Richard.

The celebrities during my time at UP were campus figures then but national figures now: Kiko Pangilinan, Mike Defensor. The others are David Celdran, Jon Santos, Benjie Paras, etc.

Anonymous said...

how can i possibly miss you. then there's richard gomez.

looks like UP had a great celebration.

Anonymous said...

sometimes i wished i went to UP.. congrats on the centennial! ;)

Forever59er said...

Lazarus!

Aha. It must have been a simultaneous kick off in all UP campuses nationwide. However, all campuses were represented in the Diliman paradade. I saw UP Baguio, Pampanga, and yes, UP Visayas.

Yup, I made sure I stole the thunder from goma. hahaha.

Forever59er said...

Pau!

Thanks. That makes me smile!

Forever59er said...

Scrooch!

Nevermind, there are more events ahead. Free econcerts, etc. galore. I will see if I can publish a calendar of events in this site so you can get posted.

Uhmmm ... yes, I like my pictures here too. Nakatsamba, wika nga. hehehe.

Forever59er said...

Feng!

Rodicks still here and still serves those yummy adobo flakes. I heard it has put up a branch somewhere.

You must come attend some centennial activities!

Forever59er said...

Emdy!

They must have come -- most of those you mentioned. Plus more. It was only Goma I stumbled on. hahaha

Forever59er said...

Evi!

You know my stomach was grumbling that day (courtesy of an extended case of dyspepsia) and I thought I wasn't properly shod. But I willed myself to join. Buti na lang. It was a great event worthy of UP.

Forever59er said...

Paolo!

I sometimes wish too. hahaha I didn't go to UP (though most of my family went there) but it was my workplace for a good part of four decades.

Anonymous said...

congratulations annamanila and to all UP students and alumni. my dad is as alumnus too. in fact, he received an invitation to join a reunion of the vanguard last month. what's the vanguard by the way?

I saw richard and you kaagad sa pic. showbiz ang dating, he he.

i spotted only one, and that is the beautiful petite lady wearing a white t-shirt with a circle design in the middle.

thanks for sharing the pictures, anna.

soloops said...

You scene-stealer you. Syempre ang pinaka-sikat ang nasa gitna, haha.

Hi Ms. Anna, remember me? Hope life's been swell. I missed reading your blog, and I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't get blocked here again.

Ang celebrity ng lahat ng celebrities, si MS. ANNAMANILA.

With the skydiving looks like this one heck of a celebration! I spot senator candidate Richard Gomez in the crowd :)

Congratulations to UP on its centennial celebration. Thank you for sharing those great photos. It sure looks like a fun and festive celebration.

Yes, I see two celebrities. I'm more particular with the one in the center of it all... such a lovely smile. :)

Anonymous said...

You look so youthful here, Anna. Must be the surging memories of those UP days, huh. I love reunions. Hope I can attend our own events at UP Baguio too. Ang saya siguro, noh? :)

I think UP Vanguards is a fraternity of ROTC members and alumni at UP. The Vanguards are a very closely knit and prestigious group.

Forever59er said...

Exkindiver!

Guapo in a pinoy rather than mestizo way, ano?

Forever59er said...

Is it going to be a centennial homecoming? I mean are you coming back this year, gypsy?

Forever59er said...

Belle!

We are a two-person mutual admiration society, Belle. hahaha. ty

Forever59er said...

Faith!

I am not that easy to forget ... esp. someone as memorable as you. hahaha I just went to visit you blog and thankfully you had one update. Awww lapit nang magkaroon ng brother (or is it sister) si Faith. Good luck, god enfold/fill you.

Anonymous said...

OMG, I'm a big fan of those two celebrities! Well, not really that big a fan of Goma. But he's so gwapo so sige na rin! I'd probably be trying to squeeze my face in that photo if I were there. Hehe

Have a good weekend!

Forever59er said...

Sidney!

This is truly a season for celebration. And how. You can never know how. :) Maybe i blog about it some time. :)

Forever59er said...

Tani!

Shhh .. no divisive comments ... hahaha. Yup, the sunken garden is turned into a public park come weekdays. One of these days, when its sunny, I will bring my andeng there. Maybe we meet there too. :)

Forever59er said...

Leah!

Oo, kainis nga, gwapo pa din. How can you not see seleb # 2 eh ang galing mamili kung saan uupo. hahaha.

Forever59er said...

Myepinoy!

Thanks Rolly for feeding my illusions of grandeur. hehehe.

Forever59er said...

Bw!

It was a big blast that aptly kicks off a year round celebration. Aaah, you may be right ... goma may be gearing up for the next election. Hwag naman senator, ano?

Forever59er said...

Rachel!

Thanks ... it was truly festive and I am glad I joined in though I had second thoughts that day. If you look at the pictures of the people, the "lovely smiles" were truly pervasive.

Forever59er said...

Rhodra!

You're right. It must have been the peculiar way the sun slanted that erased some of the wrinks and crimps. hahaha.

Forever59er said...

Chateau!

See, am truly a celeb in the eyes of my magnanimous (mapagbigay) friends. Thank you, thank you.

Unknown said...

So goma is gearing up for another round at politics? Great! time for me to sharpen my pen and my wit, hehe... :-D

I never went to UP but a lot of my high school friends did, and they all agreed that, were it not for goma's celebrity status, he wouldn't have a chance in hell at entering UP.

my association with UP is through my 2 boys--i never attended school there. but i did pass the exams for a masters degree in the school of economics.

anyway, my bunso and i see to it that we watch the celebrations in UP,be they cultural presentations, lantern parade, and centennial kick-off, etc.

this includes a jog around the oval with one of my girls, then the masses at 12 in the UP chapel.

lucky me, because i live next door--at teachers' village.

i saw in your pictures--bonding, bonding and lots of fun. UP has been your 2nd home for a long time na, ano? you are right--enjoy every moment, stock up on memories.

Forever59er said...

Rudy!

Well, very likely he will run again. Very persistent ano?

Anyway, what he took was a one or two year certificate program on film at the Film Institute that doesn't require him to pass the usual college admission test. He was also a generous donor of film equipment for the institute.

He also took (or is taking) another course at the UP Open University (the distance education campus). As its name implies, the university is very "open." I think it was the Open Univesity that designated him one of the torch bearers during the torch passing ceremony which was the highlight of the kickoff.

Forever59er said...

Sexymom!

Next time you attend Sunday mass at UP, try to catch the 11 am mass officiated by Father Jboy. He always has a treat for the church goers. Like this morning, the UP Filipiniana troupe danced folk numbers in tribute of the centennial kickoff.

As you know I never attended school at UP too unless short-term programs count. But it has been, as you say, my second home (somehow i feel it is more than a workplace) for close to four decades.

UP is the National (State ) university. In a sense it belongs to all of us Pinoys.

Lovely pictures Anna (you're looking very well!) plus Richard Gomez to boot... fantastic!
these pics made me nostalgic about school fun too..

Love the photos, AM!

UP has been home to me for a good four years of my unfinished grad studies. My family enjoys going there during weekends. In fact we had a picnic lunch there last Sunday. The children love Rodic's tapsilog. Whenever we are there, I always tell the children, that this is where they will study for college (talk about indoctrination).

P.S. We get to see the lively Father JBoy during Saturday anticipated mass, whenever we get the chance to attend (meaning I got off early from work, with time to spare for travel).

Glad to see you have a post. ((hugs)) to Andeng.

My unsolicited suggestion is FINISH! Sayang naman, sobrang sayang if you just let it go. What do you lack .. a thesis? It should be no problemo mucho to a prolific blogger like you.

All best to you and your family. I will hug Andeng for you. :) ty
