Go for idioms (e.g. take a crack at, put up with, make out with).Doubtless the most common writing mistake is "taken cared of." You don't say "paid attentioned to," do you? No, because "care" and "attention" in the examples are used as nouns, not as verbs.
Another common error is "irregardless." This is often regarded as redundant and incorrect usage. Some grammarians would say bluntly there is no such word.
When you are at a loss what to write, think of the truest thing you can think of -- then write about it.
Read, read read. Write, write, write.

In spite of what our grammar teachers (used to) say, a sentence can begin with "But," "And," or "Or." By the same token, a sentence can end with a preposition.
Split long paragraphs -- they intimidate the reader. In general -- KISS (Keep it short and sweet). And no, there's no law against one-sentence paragraphs.
Keep sentences short and crisp. But sneak in a longish sentence every now and then to avoid the unpleasant "choppy" effect.
Try reading your piece aloud. If it reads good, it must be good.
