Your Royal Weirdness or Mine?

Name six ways you are weird, my friends Chateau of imomonline and Dine of D-spot, ask me. It should have been a breeze to answer because behaving weirdly is one of the few things I do best. The only trouble was how to choose six among my hundred and one.

Lemme see. Where do I begin?

1. I am the most ligawin person in the world, and this hasn't remotely to do with being attractive to suitors unless you'd want to include young men (and women) who call up almost daily with propositions for yet another credit card deal or internet service. I am so ligawin I still lose my way around the UP campus after 30 years working there. I am so ligawin I'd enter the main door of an unfamiliar office, transact my business, and then try to let myself out through the door of the company President's room. I am so ligawin that when I eat out, I can get lost going back to my group's table from the comfort room of a biggish restaurant.
2. I am a compulsive mirror looker. I am drawn to anything that reflects my face -- including jeepney side mirrors, car windows, computer screens, the rounded side of spoons. My favorite gazing surface is the pupil of another person's eye or the shiny tip of his nose. Lately, however, I get more and more depressed when I look. I wonder why?!
3. I don't watch television -- unless it shows Philippine Idol, American Idol, or reruns of Meteor Garden and the Erap impeachment trial.
4. I don't eat breakfast and am constantly surprised my family expects me to cook it when our maid is away. My appetite is nil in the morning, begins to stir at lunch, perks up at dinner, and goes on a rampage at midnight.
5. I can't stand long telephone calls. After 30 minutes on the phone, my inner firewall goes up and I no longer hear. My ears begin to buzz, my eyes glaze, my responses reduced to soundbites like "uhmm," "aha," and "talaga." When at last, the voice at the other end thanks me for being such a good friend and listener, it's all I can do to keep me from hanging myself by the telephone cord.
6. I can't small talk. Put me in the company of people I don't know and I wouldn't know how to strike up a conversation, unless they'd want to listen to a discussion on why Hitler went to heaven. Maybe they sense this, so they give me wide clearance.

Katuwaan! Fun time! If you think you could get any weirder than me in my No. 1 (the ligawin thingie), I dare you to show me up with your own quirkiest. A surprise prize if you can beat me at being royally weird. We need an unbiased judge of course -- the first to volunteer gets it. The judge gets a keepsake, too, of course.

Note for the Non-Filipino reader:

The Pilipino word ligaw has two meanings: (1) courtship or love suit and (2) to be lost, not to know the direction. So ligawin can mean either (1) someome who is attractive to suitors; or (2) someone who has no sense of direction.

CONTEST UPDATE:

As of June 18, 1:00 a.m., we got a judge, Chesca (ex-skindiver) and six challengers: Chateau, Jigs , Evi, Sexy Mom , Richmond, and Jerry, an offline friend.

I wrote a week ago about some memes on 15 weird/little-known/whatsoever facts about me.

I guess it's somewhat similar.

Pareho pala tayo on no.5. But it's really different when it's the sweetheart at the other end of the line. Kayang-kaya ang 1 hour.

Pareho tayo sa #4. Maybe because I'm a night person. But it's not a healthy habit ha? Oh well.

hahaha! #5 - you remind me of my fil. he cannot do hour-long phone conversations with his own children who are based abroad. konting kumusta, then he passes the phone to my mil.

#3 - meteor garden and erap impeachment? hanggang ngayon? boy...

That cracked me up Anna! Laughing ,first thing in the morning, right after I got out of bed and gargled my mouth =)) , not bad!

I didn't know that you are THAT ligawin! ;-)

Funny, funny,quirky post. Love it!

So, you're a midnight snacker too? Welcome to the club...

Anonymous said...

Hi there! Thanks for playing along...
So this is the ligawin you were telling me about, LOL.
So did you see your reflection on the tip of my shiny nose?? or my shiny forehead?? haha I'm like that too- compulsive mirror looker!
# 6, same tayo. I'm shy in real life hehe.
On your dare: doesn't my borderline-schizo self-dialogues top your being ligawin??

Anonymous said...

How come you can eat to your heart's content at midnight and still maintain your slim figure? Life is soo unfair...:P

Jigs said...

Small Talk is my achilles heel! I can't do decent small talk to save my life! So I need other people to get the conversation going before I can join in. haha!

Here's one weird thing about me, I am very very reluctant to spend brand new crisp money. Yeah, I hate spending it even if I have to. It's like a part of me dies when I spend fresh off the printers money. Hahaha!

Jigs said...

By the way, may comment section ako sa blog ko, pero sometimes nawawala siya. I just needs to be refreshed. hehe!

I linked you up na! :)

Of course, the sweetie is exempt from most of these -- except, if you like mirrors like me, i guess you'd go for looking at your reflection on the babe's eyes and nose. Then when she notices, you can just say you love the way she looks tonight.

Your fil and mil ... your parents/grandparents? Interesting!!

Talaga, does meteor garden and the erap impeachment trial seem so long ago for you.

It must be true then that for the young the days are short and the years are long and for those older the reverse.

Forever59er said...

Gina I also wouldn't believe anyone could be that ligawin -- if it were other than me. I went through all life with this abnormality, with most people none the wiser, and now they can excuse it for my being old and senile. haha

So I got challenge No. 1 from you:

YOUR TALKING TO YOURSELF, BORDERLINE SCHIZO quirk

against my

MOST LIGAWIN IN THE WORLD cerebral impairment.

I was so proud of myself pa nga i was able to direct you to my office kagabi. :)

Oo nga, masarap ngang magsalamin sa shiny nose and forehead mo ..so devoid of makeup pero beauty pa din. Except that we were't seated opposite each other. Sayang.

Forever59er said...

Kathy!

I don't eat breakfast, i drink a glass of grapefruit juice everyday, plus I suck my stomach till i i turn green. You would look lean too if you did that.

Your HATING TO SPEND CRISP, PRINTER-INK SMELLING, NEW PESO BILLS (OHTERWISE A PART OF YOU DIES)

versus

my MOST LIGAWIN IN THE WORLD quirk.

With such a credible judge in place -- very credible because she's also got her quota of quirks -- this contest should now rock.

Ty Cheska.

Re the "ligawin", there's this thing called orientation to directions or something like that which pertains to directionality. It is one of the signs for learning disability. BUT, since obviously you don't have LD, maybe its something else.. Ano kaya yun? Hehehe...

Sleep na po, morning na..

Forever59er said...

Julie!

Can you give me the name for this directionality impairment so I can research about it. Serious. I am not worried .. too late to worry. Let me just say I am curious ... hehehe

Eachier Julie, I did not exaggerate that ligawin item .. unlike the "compulsion to mirror" one. haha

Hello your royal Quirkiness,
Mirrors are a girl's best friend. Maybe its just natural to do that.
Ligawin ka? Ako rin, pero not as weird as being lost after 30 yrs on same place.

Pa-contest? Hmnn, let me see.
I cant think of any ka-wirduhan. Pass ako. Next time, make it easy naman. Its hard to beat the queen.

My entries:

When I pray, I pray repeatedly and loudly and pronounce every word clearly. Sometimes I pray the same prayer three times a day, especially my intentions for my family. Why? I want to be sure God hears my prayers. It's only lately I realize that God hears prayers even before we say it. But I still can't break the habit.

JERRU'S COMPULSIVE AND REPEATED AND WELL ENUNCIATED PRAYING (TO THE POINT OF SHOUTING TO GOD) FOR FEAR HIS INTENTIONS MIGHT NOT BE HEARD

vs

MY ROYAL LIGAWIN-ABILITY

i think my weirdness is brought about by OCD. but i have not been clinically diagnosed.

i stand infront my stove for minutes making sure that the knobs are all pointing to 0 or off. it is as if staring is not enough, i use my hands to motion a line in a way to tell my brain that it is accurately pointing to 0.

Forever59er said...

EVI'S COMPULSIVELY MAKING SURE THE GAS BURNERS ARE ALL ON O (OFF), STARING AT THEM FOR A LONG TIME TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE OFF AND EVEN FINGERING THE ENGRAVED LINE FOR GOOD MEASURE

vs

my LIGAWIN DISFUNCTIONALITY.

I hope madagdagan pa ng konti para naman medyo mahirapan si judge Chesca.

am ligawin, too, big time. so from experience, my husband usually do the opposite of what i say. when i say turn right, he turns left and many times he is right but not all the time.

Forever59er said...

Belle!

Really? Up here (appear)! haha

Me .. I never even dare to give directions to husband nor children. Basta ... inside the car, upo lang ako coolly .. just a passenger. Never a backseat driver. And I am so genuinely grateful not one of my children took after my directional dysfunctionality.

Hi, first time commenting here. I saw your interview questions on lazarus' blog and they were very tough indeed. I'm sure lazarus will be challenged. :D Anyway, regarding your post, I can relate with #1: I also have a tendency to get lost. That's why I always print out yahoo maps directions. I'm very close to just buying a GPS device. i can also relate to # 3: I rarely watch TV. I just don't have time and also, I never got caught up in the American Idol craze. I did watch Survivor, Seasons 1 and 2, but after that, I realized it was just a game show. :)

Forever59er said...

Wil!

Toughies ba? Is that why a few haven't posted their response yet? For a moment, I thought you'd wanna be interviewed too. Haha.

I based most of my Qs on the person's posts, including those archived. I promised kasi to ask 'very them" Qs the same way Noemi Dado asked me 'very me' ones.

Join naman in my royalquirk contest. You can exaggerate. lol

Anonymous said...

here'e my ENTRY, your Royal Weirdness,

I won’t be caught without mascara on, not ever! Not even when I go swimming, not even when I die, if I can help it. Everyone knows me as the one with nice long lashes. I do not deny that I load up on mascara, but people say that even if one loads on mascara, if the lashes are not long anyway, they will not be successful in enhancing the lashes. So, yes, I have nice lashes, and my eyes are my best assets.

One time, when I was in Dhaka (Bangladesh), we got the news while on field trip that I was not chosen for a promotion. It was so sad news that my lady companions, an Indian and a Swedish, were expecting me to cry. I didn't, I couldn't. The reason? The mascara that I used that day was not waterproof. I thought it would have been so gross if mascara had smeared, mixing with tears.

When I gave birth (all 7 of them), I always saw to it that I have my lashes properly curl-lashed and mascara-ed.

Forever59er said...

Sexy Mom!

Now I am properly scared! THAT is also being ROYALLY weird. They have promised to be together for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health -- your mascara and your long eyelashes.

Attention, judge Cheska. Now this contest has really begun to rock.

sheilamarie said...

LOL! Anna, I had a great time reading your post. Especially numbers 1 & 2. *grins*

As for being ligawin, I can totally relate. Haha!

Anonymous said...

I guess the weird thing about me that can match your number one would be...

Since my whole name, Richmond Querubin ACOSTA, I guess I'll just tell you how saintly I am. And saints usually become saints because of miracles, then I'll just tell you about how I experience God's amazing miracles at the weirdest situation.

This is the best example...

When I was little, there was a massive brownout in our town. Since it was our family's tradition back then to pray at exactly 6PM my mother ushered us to pray despite the dimness of the house. We were in front of the altar, and i prayed my prayer aloud (Kids usually pray aloud). I was like, "Jesus, pakibalik na po yung ilaw." at that moment the incandescent candles on the altar and the fluorescent lamp above our heads flickered... AND LO AND BEHOLD... BUMALIK NA YUNG KURYENTE. and we wre like "It's a miracle."

On the other hand, I am a TV addict. I even tape shows that overlap so I can watch both of them. :)

I know you seldom watch tv too, except PI. That isn't weird enough, sorry. :)

Same context. But not same degree di ba?

I think I should watch more tv. I know there are great shows. :)

Joke only.

Ako dati di ko rin kaya tumagal ng 30 minutes sa phone pero ngayon sanay na kasi part ng trabaho. ha ha ha.

Good question -- but do I have a good answer?

Lemme see ... Aside from stock rooms, conference rooms and offices na hindi ko dapat pasukan,i have also tried to get into cars that are not ours.

When I am in a strange place, and I want to walk about ... I walk a straight path. When I reach a fork, i turn back.

I have gotten lost in Antipolo Maytime) and in a subway in Japan. No big deal .. i took a cab back to home/hotel.

I also got lost in Agoo, La Union -- remember the celebrated 'dancing sun,' and Judel, the Pinoy version of Bernadette? I was with my sisters and their families to witness the 'miracle.' Grabe talaga ang crowd, the traffic was horrendous. We were inching our way to where we were parked ... suddenly, I couldn't see my companions anymore. I spent maybe 2-3 hours looking ... konti pa lang may cellphone nuon. When it got dark, I found a home that offered meals then asked they put me up for the night. The next morning (a Sunday), I attended mass in the Cathedral and boarded a bus to Manila. When I reached home, my sisters and company were still at large -- they also didnt find the car and just hitched with a family. I guess I was luckier than they were because I was well rested and fed.

Come to think of it ... ang dami ko ngang adventures haha . And take note, I tell them they were the ones who lost -- not the other way round.

Recap:
Annamanila’s ligawin -I still lose my way around the UP campus after 30 years working there. I am so ligawin I'd enter the main door of an unfamiliar office, transact my business, and then try to let myself out through the door of the company President's room. I am so ligawin that when I eat out, I can get lost going back to my group's table from the comfort room of a biggish restaurant.

Chateu-
I talk to myself. Sometimes in monologues. Sometimes in dialogues. Yes, I imagine I am talking to someone. And this someone talks back. With matching smirking, smiling, head-shaking (depending on what the topic is). I love to do this when I’m driving alone. The usual topics are bad motorists and/or pedestrians.

Jigs-
I am very very reluctant to spend brand new crisp money. Yeah, I hate spending it even if I have to. It's like a part of me dies when I spend fresh off the printers money.

Jerry-
When I pray, I pray repeatedly and loudly and pronounce every word clearly. Sometimes I pray the same prayer three times a day, especially my intentions for my family. Why? I want to be sure God hears my prayers. It's only lately I realize that God hears prayers even before we say it. But I still can't break the habit.

Evi-
i stand infront my stove for minutes making sure that the knobs are all pointing to 0 or off. it is as if staring is not enough, i use my hands to motion a line in a way to tell my brain that it is accurately pointing to 0.

SEXY MOM- TILL-DEATH-DO-THEM PART ATTACHMENT TO EYELASH MASCARA -- TO THE POINT OF STOPPING HER TEARS (and keeping her emotions in check no less)
SO THE MASCARA WON'T STREAK

Richmond Querubin miracleworking prayer for light during a power outage, after which he felt God-like with the feeling of success when.... "AND SO THERE WAS LIGHT"
________________________________________________________________
Annamanila, your ligawin trait is definitely quirky.
Weird is defined as
1.Of, relating to, or suggestive of the preternatural or supernatural.
2.Of a strikingly odd or unusual character; strange.
3. Of or relating to fate or the Fates.

Since Faith, Rhodora, Pining, Sheilamarie, Belle and Leah share this trait with you, I couldn’t call you unusual anymore – hence the reason for someone else winning.

Both Jerry and Richmond get a special mention for
“The Joseph Conrad Award for weirdness”
Joseph Conrad said the words: “There is a weird power in a spoken word.”

Sexy Mom gets a special mention for being extremely funny. A woman after my own heart I almost awarded it to her because this was truly my favorite—but in fairness to the weird contest—I will wager to say that there are many women out there like her (she is just honest)

Jigs, many people are also reluctant to spend new money. There is a specialness attached to it. I guess that’s why during pamasko time Ninongs and Ninangs like to get fresh bills from the bank.

So the real tie was between Chateu and Evi. Both of them have pretty weird habits. Such practices put you in par with people in that movie “One flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.”
Having said that, the award goes to Chateu since she does this in public.
Which is just plain weird. At least Evi lines up her off and signals to her brain in the privacy of her own kitchen.

(BTW, may I donate my ‘judge prize’ to Sexymom since she really made me laugh?)

This was fun.
Thanks-
Congratulations Chateau.

When are you available for the awarding ceremony?

Aw, the contest is over??? Anna, kung nakahabol lang sana ang sinabi mong comment sa blog ko- about having just 1 jewelry. JUST 1!!!! your wedding ring, and that you don't like "hardware" that much- now that would have taken the prize. Ay,weird, weird, weird :))

Bow ako kay Judge Cheska. 'analytic, wholistic, bombastic' nga siya.

Uhhm, okay, I re-read your comment again. I thought, ay, baka nasa malaking baul lang ang lahat ng 'blings' ni Anna ayaw lang gamitin. ;0)

Gina!

haha when you said i might have a big baul for 'blings,' i almost agreed thinking that you were referring to quirks. But suddenly, i realized you meant the hardware. lol I had a few blings din, mostly gifts, pero i lose them. i dont think kasi they're big deal. i used to wear pearl earrings ... pero hindi na din ngayon. I just dont feel that jewelry enhances me. just quirky that way.

Talaga? you thought that aversion for hardware could have given me back my queen of quirk title? Eh kung ikaw ang judge. hehe ..

Hey .. i think i had this pahabol in my comment na baka 'sour grapes' lang ako tungkol sa jewelry. I think the idea there is i don't buy because they're expensive and i am broke Pero thats less than truthful. and i dont mean about being broke.

Ano ba ito ... parang blog piece na ang haba ano. Si Gina kasi eh. haha Hope you;re having a good day as i prepare to sleep.

Ssexymom!

Hahaha, you're so funny. At may pahabol ka pa ha. Last ditch effort ba to grab the crown from Chateau?!

But I agree with Judge Chesca your masca(ra)bre have to be recognized somehow. Hmmmm
