SPAM-WHAMMED?!

Just a quick warning to my fellow bloggies:

IF YOU HAVE REMOVED ANTI-SPAM AND COMMENT-MODERATION FEATURES IN YOUR BLOG, PLEASE THINK OF PUTTING THESE BACK.

I have months ago opened my comment box wide, wanting to make it easy for readers to post and smug that an unwanted or offensive or spammed post could easily be junked, as I have junked a few before.

Somebody please -- conk me on the head!

Yesterday, one of my previous posts, "Incredulous in Iloilo" was recipient of a 200-page (must be as it took me ten minutes just to scroll down) comment from "anonymous." As it turned out, the comment box is so accommodating of comments no matter how kilometric. It messed up the whole box including the legitimate posts. Nagpatong-patong ang mga text.

Even though I succeeded in locating and clicking on the trash ("delete comment") bin among the rubble, I couldn't remove the offending message, try mightily as I did.

Tomorrow, I will SOS our inhouse computer doctor. If I need to delete the post, then I will. Till then, be WARNED.

Meanwhile, I am back to comment-moderation mode and praying the rest of my site is safe.

Postword

As of October 18, the malignant post has been excised. I simply tried clicking on the trash bin again and this time, the "delete comment" box appeared which enabled me to click "delete comment forever" which I hope means till kingdom come.

Oh yes, I noticed that stupid nonsense clogging your comment bpx the other day, and I was wondering why you never deleted that. I've seen this message in other blogs before and believe me, it just keeps coming back. So better start putting up those comment moderation boxes folks...

No wonder your comment box refused to load. Anyway, thanks for the tip. Will be putting in comment moderation as well :)

Ako naman overacting yung anti-spam ko, pati ikaw, hinaharang ang comment mo. hehehe. But anyway, buti na ang sigurado, di ba?

might as well activate the word verification here. it is in your settings/comment menu.

This might deter robots easy access to you comment box.

Having learned my lessons on nuisance emails that "barrage" my inbox, I have become more careful. But thanks for the warning though, since I was actually thinking of going lax so I don't have to moderate...;)

the same reason why i changed the settings on my blog. im not sure if that was a spammer, nagtagalog kasi. sabi ba naman in one of my old posts " maganda ka pala, i wonder how you look like naked." kaloka!

I noticed that too, very, very long.I just hope everything will be better now.

Re: Rhodora, I know what you are talking about because my comments are considered spam in your blog, :)

Take care, MRC.

so, the "bots" got you ha? :) the bright side is- ibig sabihin, your blog generates a lot of traffic. :) ha-ha.

seriously, they're annoying.

thanks for the tip. will word verification be enough? i kinda hate the tedious task of moderating comments.

Thanks for the tip. I'm actually thinking of doing the opposite. I've always had comment moderation set up and was mulling over the idea of disabling it so thanks! You just saved me a potential headache. ;)

I think word verification is enough. I was also spammed with comments before but after installing the word verification feature, I stopped receiving spam comments.

aww, this is scary, anna. i've never moderated the comments on my site, though i do have the word verification feature. i still get spam every now and then, but delete them right away. i dread to get a 200-pager though. ahh, the new things we have to learn, huh? :)

that's why I've reinstalled my captcha thingy some months ago, I have also been infected with this digusting spams
anyway, thanks for the reminder :-)

That happened to me before as well. although I was able to delete the comment right away.
And then I added the word verification. And then I removed it again. My blogspot blog doesnt have a lot of trafiic as before so its OK naman. The wordpress has Akismet so my munimuni.com is safe naman.

Hi Annamanila, it happened to me 2 days ago, me nag comment super long re: reincarnation. Deleted them kagad. Kaya pala some blogs I've read, moderated na uli the comments. Dami talaga walang magawa.

i'd agree with abaniko. word moderation is enough. Bad talaga mga spammers, ay naku.

hey where did my comment go????

Anyway sinabi ko lang naman "HOLY SPAM!!!"

hehe

anyway why don't you answer the spam comment (like what I did..toink) and maybe it'll stop hihihihihi just messing :)

I haven't experienced anything like this when I was still in blogger. But I used to have word verification. Sakit ng ulo yang inabot mo.

Wordpress has this feature that catches the spam and deletes them for you. Paminsan-minsan meron ding nakakalusot but you can still delete them.

Hello, Anna =) I saw that kilometric comment happen on my friend's blog and since then I put up the word verification thingy.

Better safe than sorry. =)

:-)

Hi Annamanila!! I just got that same 200 page spam comment. Since I already activated comment moderation, thanks to you, I was able to send that baby back to where he belongs..in the trash bin :)

I also got a lengthy spammy comment...but fortunately my blogging software blocked it and waited for my approval. Got rid of it in a jiffy! Grr talaga ang mga taong walang agawa sa buhay.

exskindiver said...

yes annamanila-
thanks to you.
i too immediately did the same and caught the spam in time.

thanks for the warning!!!

(it was the circumcision spam right?)

Hey buds!

Glad my warning helped cookie (scrooch chronicles) and chesca (exskindiver).

The spamming is persistent. It has tried to mess up with my site at least three times more. I don't know Bill that it's hitting only well read sites. I think it's rather indiscriminate, for how come kasama ako?

Forever59er said...

Myepinoy, abaniko and leah!

I opted for comment moderation rather than word verification since I myself get imvierna sometimes when I could hardly decipher the sometimes deliberately misshapen characters I have to copy. Old age, you know. hahaha

When I was in blogger then, these spams had really created major headaches for me, mostly bots ads of strange sounding drugs, and lots of viagras.

I learned greatly from that instance that now, my captcha is always on.

Talagang paborito nilang i-ispam ang mga Blogger blogs dahil sa popularity and wide-use nito.

I miss your entries!

Anonymous said...

anna, i am glad i am not so far behind in commenting on your posts. i only missed a couple..hehe.

hope things are better now.

Anonymous said...

what happened to my comments? it disappeared.

Anonymous said...

I am glad you were able to delete the spam. Continue watching out as i know this can recur.

sorry to say (even if i am tecchie-challenged), but that must have been one of the stupidest things you must have done in your bloglife--the antispam thingey should always be there
